Garden Gate Supply and Installation in Newark & Nottinghamshire

A garden gate is one of those finishing details that people notice. A well-fitted gate that swings properly, latches cleanly and matches the fencing on either side immediately lifts the appearance of a property. A gate that sags, drags, or does not close properly suggests the whole installation was done in a hurry. At HJS, we fit garden gates to last — with properly hung posts, the right hardware and materials that are up to the job.

Types of Garden Gates We Supply and Fit

Timber Side Gates

Matching solid timber side gates are our most common garden gate installation across Newark and Nottinghamshire. We build or source gates that match the height and style of adjoining closeboard, panel or picket fencing. Single gates are typically 90cm to 1.2m wide; double gates span wider access points.

Composite Garden Gates

For customers opting for composite fencing, matching composite gate panels are available in the same profiles and colours. These require no maintenance and will not warp or swell with moisture — making them ideal for gates that are used daily.

Metal and Steel Gates

Metal gates — including traditional wrought iron designs and contemporary steel flat-bar gates — are available in various styles and finishes. Steel gates are more suitable for heavier applications and wider spans where timber would not be rigid enough.

Driveway Gates

Larger driveway gates for vehicle access need heavyweight posts, quality hinges rated for the gate weight and specific clearance consideration for the swing arc. We supply and install both single and double driveway gates in timber, composite and metal.

Gate Hardware — What Makes the Difference

The quality of the hardware is as important as the gate itself. Heavy-duty galvanised or stainless steel strap hinges rated for the weight of the gate, a solid latch and a slam post (or auto-latch post) at the closing side all contribute to a gate that works properly for years rather than months. We specify the correct hardware for every gate on every installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you fit a gate into an existing fence?

Yes, in many cases. The feasibility depends on the condition of the existing posts on either side of the intended opening and whether they can carry gate hinges. We assess this during the site visit. In some cases, new gate posts will need to be installed regardless of the fence condition.

Why does my gate sag?

Sagging is almost always caused by one of three things: the gate posts were not concreted properly, the hinges were sized incorrectly for the gate weight, or the gate itself has a structural issue. We can diagnose the cause and repair or replace as appropriate.

Can I have a gate that closes automatically?

Yes. Spring-loaded hinges are available for side gates where self-closing is required, particularly useful for garden gates where children or pets are present. For vehicle gates requiring powered operation, we can advise on suitable automation systems.
