A properly laid pathway should be wide enough to walk comfortably (900mm minimum for a main path), have a consistent level surface and drain water away from the sides. We lay pathways in a range of materials from simple concrete slabs to natural sandstone and porcelain depending on the garden setting and the level of finish required.

Stepping Stones

Stepping stones set into lawn or ground cover planting are one of the most effective ways to create movement through a garden without the formality of a full pathway. We set stepping stones at the correct height relative to the lawn surface (slightly below mowing height) and at a stride-friendly spacing.

Side Access Paths

Side return paths between properties are practical necessities that are often given insufficient thought. A well-laid side path in a durable material prevents the area becoming muddy and provides firm footing for bin access, garden maintenance and utility access. We assess drainage requirements for side paths carefully, as these areas are often sheltered from sun and slow to dry.

What width should a garden path be?

A comfortable main garden path should be at minimum 900mm wide — wide enough for one person plus a wheelbarrow or with room to step to one side. Main entrance paths and paths that will see regular use benefit from being 1.2m wide. Secondary paths and stepping stone trails can be narrower.

Can you lay paving around existing plants?

Yes. We work around existing trees, shrubs and planting with care, maintaining adequate root zone clearance from any pavers laid near tree bases and cutting around established plants accurately. Where plants need to be lifted temporarily and re-planted, we advise on the best approach.
