Indian Sandstone Patios — Warmth and Character for Nottinghamshire Gardens

Indian sandstone is the most enduringly popular natural stone paving material in the UK, and it has been transforming gardens across Newark, Southwell, Collingham and the wider Nottinghamshire area for years. Its warm, earthy tones — ranging from golden honey through rustic autumn blends to cool graphite — suit a wide range of property styles, particularly traditional, period and country settings. Properly selected and correctly installed, Indian sandstone creates an outdoor space with real character and natural beauty.

Calibrated vs Uncalibrated Indian Sandstone

Calibrated Indian sandstone has been machine-cut to a consistent thickness on the back face, which makes it easier to lay to an even surface using a thinner mortar bed. Uncalibrated (or riven) stone varies in thickness and requires more skill and time to bed correctly. We use calibrated stone as standard to ensure a level, stable result. The top face of both types retains the natural riven texture.

Popular Indian Sandstone Colours

Buff and Honey

Warm yellow-ochre tones that suit traditional and period properties. The most widely used Indian sandstone colour in UK gardens and the natural companion to brick and stone-built homes.

Raj Green (Multi-Blue)

A grey-green hue with subtle colour variation. Particularly distinctive and well-suited to contemporary planting schemes and modern garden designs.

Kandla Grey

A cool mid-grey tone that works well with white and grey painted properties and modern exterior colour schemes. Popular in newer developments and contemporary renovation projects across Nottinghamshire.

Riven Mixed Colour

Blended sandstone in a combination of russet, buff, grey and green tones. Creates a diverse, organic appearance particularly suited to cottage gardens and informal settings.

Maintaining Indian Sandstone

Indian sandstone benefits from sealing with a quality impregnating sealer shortly after installation and annually thereafter. Sealing reduces staining from organic material (leaf tannin, food and drink spillage) and makes cleaning much easier. Unsealed sandstone will weather and stain without necessarily suffering structural damage, but the appearance deteriorates more quickly. We advise on sealing at handover and can supply suitable products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Indian sandstone stain easily?

Untreated Indian sandstone is porous and will absorb oil, leaf tannin and other staining agents relatively readily. A quality impregnating sealer significantly reduces this. Once sealed, most staining is limited to the surface and can be cleaned off.

How long does Indian sandstone last?

Indian sandstone correctly installed and maintained should last 20 to 30 years or more. Natural stone is one of the most durable paving materials available. The pointing will typically need attention before the stone itself shows significant wear.

Can Indian sandstone be laid near a house?

Yes, but falls must be established away from the building and there should be a minimum of two courses below the damp proof course. We always observe these guidelines during patio installation.
