Resin Bound Driveways — Smooth, Permeable and Low Maintenance

Resin bound driveways have become one of the most sought-after driveway surfaces in the UK over the last decade. The finished surface is smooth and decorative without gaps or loose material, while still being fully permeable — meaning surface water drains through the surface rather than running off. At HJS, we install resin bound driveways across Newark-on-Trent, Southwell, Grantham and throughout Nottinghamshire.

How Resin Bound Surfaces Are Installed

Resin bound surfacing is a two-stage process. Natural aggregates — typically 2-6mm clean, kiln-dried stone — are mixed with a UV-stable clear polyurethane resin in a forced-action mixer until every stone is fully coated. The mixture is then hand-trowelled over a prepared base at a depth of typically 15-18mm. When cured (usually around 6-8 hours in good conditions), the surface is solid, smooth and ready for use.

Aggregate Colour Options

Resin bound surfaces are available in a wide range of natural aggregate blends. Common choices include warm buff and honey tones for traditional properties, silver grey and white for contemporary settings, and golden flint for rural and period homes. Bespoke mixes combining two or more aggregates are available. We carry samples from our suppliers to help customers visualise the finished result.

Resin Bound vs Resin Bonded — the Difference Matters

The two terms are often confused. Resin bound involves mixing aggregate with resin and laying it as a solid, permeable surface. Resin bonded involves scattering loose aggregate over a resin-coated base — the result is a textured surface but not permeable, and aggregate can be displaced over time. We only install resin bound systems, which are the better and more durable option for driveways.

Is Resin Bound Suitable for My Property?

Resin bound surfacing is suitable for most residential driveways where a solid base is in sound condition. It can be laid over existing tarmac or concrete if the surface is structurally sound and level — this can reduce the groundworks cost significantly. For new installations, we prepare the appropriate sub-base before laying. Resin bound is not recommended on surfaces that flex or have significant movement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a resin bound driveway last?

A properly installed resin bound driveway should last 15 to 25 years. The lifespan depends primarily on the quality of the base preparation, the quality of the resin product used and the UV stability of the resin binder. We use UV-stable aliphatic resins, not aromatic resins that yellow over time.

Do resin bound driveways need planning permission?

Resin bound surfaces are permeable, so they generally comply with current permitted development rules for driveways over 5 square metres. This is one of the reasons resin bound has grown in popularity — it satisfies drainage requirements without additional drainage provision.

Can resin bound driveways crack?

Resin bound installedon a sound, properly prepared base will not crack under normal residential use. Cracking can occur if the base beneath it moves or if the resin is applied too thinly. This is why base preparation and material depth are non-negotiable parts of our installation process.
