How long does tarmac take to set?

Tarmac cools rapidly after laying, typically within an hour in normal UK weather conditions, but we recommend leaving a new tarmac surface for 24 to 48 hours before regular vehicle use. Full cure takes slightly longer but the surface is generally trafficable the day after installation.

Can tarmac be laid over concrete or old tarmac?

In some cases, yes. If the existing surface is structurally sound and level, a fresh macadam layer can be applied over it — known as an overlay. This is more economical than full removal and reconstruction. We assess whether an overlay is appropriate during the site survey.

Does tarmac get soft in hot weather?

High-quality macadam used by professional contractors is formulated to withstand the temperature range experienced in the UK and does not soften under normal summer conditions.
