Why Closeboard Fencing Is the UK’s Favourite Garden Fence

Closeboard fencing — also called feather edge fencing — is the most widely installed garden fence in the United Kingdom, and for good reason. It is built board by board on site rather than in prefabricated panels, which means it can follow uneven ground cleanly, handles demanding weather conditions well and does not have the weak points that make panel fencing prone to blowing out. At HJS, closeboard is our most requested residential fence and one we install daily across Newark, Balderton, Farndon and beyond.

How Closeboard Fencing Is Constructed

Closeboard fencing consists of three key components: posts, arris rails and feather edge boards. Posts are set into the ground in concrete to give the fence a solid footing. Arris rails — the horizontal triangular timbers — run between posts to carry the boards. Feather edge boards are overlapped vertically along the rails to create a close, solid fence face with no visible gaps. A gravel board runs along the bottom to keep the timber clear of wet soil.

All of the timber we use is pressure-treated (tanalised) to resist rot. We concrete every post and use the correct arris rail clips and board nails throughout. The result is a fence that should last 20 years or more with minimal maintenance.

Closeboard vs Panel Fencing — What Is the Difference?

The key difference is construction. Panel fencing uses pre-built panels slotted or screwed between posts. When a panel warps, cracks or blows out in the wind, the whole panel needs replacing. Closeboard fencing is board-by-board, so individual boards can be replaced without affecting the rest of the run. It is also considerably more robust in high winds because the individual boards flex rather than acting as a solid sail.

Closeboard Fencing Costs in Newark

Pricing depends on the length of the run, ground conditions and post specification. A standard closeboard installation in the Newark area typically costs between £90 and £150 per metre, including posts set in concrete, arris rails, gravel boards and feather edge boards. Post-only replacements where existing rails and boards are in good condition are charged separately. We always provide a written quote after a site visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does closeboard fencing last?

Properly installed pressure-treated closeboard fencing typically lasts between 20 and 25 years. Concrete posts last even longer. The gravel board is usually the first component to need attention, but this can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the fence.

Can closeboard fencing be installed on a slope?

Yes. One of the main advantages of closeboard over panel fencing is that it steps neatly with sloping ground. Posts can be vertical on a gradient while the boards follow the slope, giving a clean and professional result that is very difficult to achieve with panel fencing.

What height is standard for closeboard fencing?

The most common height for back garden closeboard fencing is 1.8 metres (approximately six feet). This provides good privacy and is within permitted development rules. We can install at other heights to suit your requirements.

Do you use timber or concrete posts?

We use pressure-treated softwood posts as standard. Concrete posts are available on request and are a good option where ground conditions are particularly wet or where longevity is the priority. We will advise which is most suitable during the site visit.
