Feather edge panels are pre-built sections that can be installed more quickly and are a good choice for level ground where speed and cost are priorities.
Board-by-Board (Closeboard)
The premium option. Built on site to the exact length and height required, following any gradient in the ground. Posts are concreted, rails are fixed and boards are overlapped at a consistent margin along the full run. Individual boards can be replaced years later without disturbing the surrounding fence.
Feather Edge Panel Fencing
A cost-effective alternative for straightforward level runs. Feather edge panels are slotted or bolted between posts and give a similar appearance to board-by-board with faster installation. Less suitable for slopes or uneven ground as gaps appear under the lower edge of panels.
Materials and Treatment
All feather edge boards and rails we supply are pressure-treated softwood. Tanalised timber is kiln-dried and then impregnated with preservative under pressure, which means the treatment penetrates the wood rather than just coating the surface. This is significantly more durable than surface-treated or untreated timber and forms the baseline for a long-lasting fence.

What size feather edge boards are used?
Standard feather edge boards used in residential closeboard fencing are typically 125mm wide and 1.8 metres long, with a tapered profile from around 12mm at the thick edge to 3mm at the thin edge. Wider boards (150mm) are available and give a slightly bolder appearance.
Can feather edge fencing be painted or stained?
Yes. New pressure-treated timber should be left to weather for three to six months before applying any stain or paint, as the treatment needs to dry out first. After that, a quality exterior timber stain or preservative treatment can be applied and reapplied every two to three years to maintain appearance and protection.
Is feather edge fencing the same as closeboard fencing?
Yes — the two terms are used interchangeably. Feather edge refers to the profile of the individual board; closeboard describes the construction method of overlapping those boards. You will hear both terms used by contractors; they mean the same thing.
