We lift the affected blocks, address the sub-base beneath — usually by removing and recompacting or adding material — and re-lay the blocks. The advantage of block paving is that this work can be done without replacing the entire surface.

Cracked or Potholed Tarmac

Water ingress and frost cycles cause tarmac to crack and eventually potholes form where the sub-base below has been undermined. We cut out the damaged area cleanly, repair the sub-base where required and fill with new tarmac, hand compacted to a smooth finish. For widespread cracking, a full resurfacing overlay may be more cost-effective than multiple patched repairs.

Failed Pointing and Joints

Block paving joints deteriorate over time, particularly if the original joint sand was not stabilised. Loose and missing jointing allows weed growth, water infiltration and block movement. We clean the joints and fill with kiln-dried or polymeric sand, which resists washing out and inhibits weed growth.

Edge Restraint Failure

Edge restraints (haunching) around the perimeter of block paving keep everything locked in place. When the haunch cracks or is dislodged, blocks around the perimeter begin to move and lean outward. We relay and re-haunch affected edges as a standalone repair.

Drainage Improvements

Standing water on a driveway is usually a result of incorrect fall direction during original installation or settlement creating depressions. In some cases, drainage is the issue rather than the surface itself. We diagnose the cause and either relay the surface with corrected levels or, where needed, introduce additional drainage.

We give an honest assessment. If the underlying sub-base is sound and problems are localised, targeted repairs are the right answer. If there is widespread failure throughout the sub-base or the surface is at end of its useful life, we will say so clearly and provide a replacement quote alongside the repair option.
